Our Kind of Towns: The Best Mountain Towns in Colorado
Not every town that calls itself an outdoor town has earned it. Some have a big box gear store, a gondola, and a Lululemon — and not much else underneath. The best mountain towns in Colorado have something harder to manufacture. A real community. A main street with actual soul. People who genuinely live the life they’re talking about.
If you are looking for the best towns to visit in Colorado, here are our favorites — starting with home.
Basalt — Home Base
We’re biased and we’re completely fine with that. Sitting at the confluence of the Fryingpan and Roaring Fork Rivers, Basalt is one of the most underrated mountain towns in Colorado and one of the most genuinely alive. There are endless things to do in Basalt CO, from world-class fishing and trails out the back door to a farmers market worth showing up early for. This is where The Outside Society lives and we couldn’t have picked a better backyard.
Carbondale — Art, Community, and Mt. Sopris
Carbondale sits at the base of the Elk Mountains with a vibrant arts scene and serious trail access. Crystal River Park alone offers kayaking, paddleboarding, hiking, and mountain biking right from town. It has the energy of a place that hasn't lost itself — creative, unpretentious, and genuinely proud.
Crested Butte — Colorado’s Last Great Ski Town
Fiercely independent and free-spirited, Crested Butte has held onto its identity harder than almost anywhere else. World-class mountain biking in summer, legendary skiing in winter, and wildflowers in July that will stop you mid-stride. It’s a top contender for the best towns to visit in Colorado if you want to avoid the big-box resorts.
Salida — Heart of the Rockies
The Arkansas River runs right through it and the Collegiate Peaks surround it on every side. Salida works hard and plays harder — hot springs in town, world-class whitewater on the doorstep, and a community energy that makes you feel welcome five minutes after you arrive.
Telluride — Box Canyon Magic
Tucked into a postcard-perfect box canyon with the San Juan Mountains rising on three sides, Telluride is one of those places that genuinely takes your breath away. Historic, stunningly beautiful, and home to a festival culture that brings world-class music and film to one of the most dramatic settings in the state.
Ouray — The Switzerland of America
Encircled by towering peaks with hot springs right in town and world-class ice climbing in winter. Small, proud, and completely itself — Ouray is one of those mountain towns in Colorado that reminds you exactly why this state is different from everywhere else.
Paonia — The Underrated One
Funky, agricultural, and genuinely off most people’s radar. Paonia sits at the edge of the West Elk Wilderness with orchards, vineyards, and serious public land access. Kebler Pass right next door is one of the most spectacular drives in all of Colorado, especially when the aspens turn.
